Respirator Fit Testing Clinics in WNY/Finger Lakes 2019

April 2 - May 16, 2019

The New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH) and HealthWorks Occupational Health Services are providing a series of respirator fit testing clinics in our region. During the clinics NYCAMH will provide medical evaluations, respirator fit tests, and WPS compliant trainings on how to properly inspect, put on, take off, fit, seal check, use, clean, maintain, and store respirators. A respirator fit test ensures that a particular make, model, and size of respirator fits the wearer's face and will meet the wearer's needs. A fit test is specific to the make, model, and size of respirator.

If a worker wears more than one style of respirator, including filtering face-pieces, they must be fit-tested for each one. Please keep in mind that a clean-shaven face is necessary for masks to be effective and for fit-testing to be possible.

Clinic appointments are 1 hour long, and groups of 4 workers can be seen at a time. Medical evaluations, fit tests, and trainings are available in both English and Spanish. Fees range from $25-$65 per person/per mask: please ask for details when scheduling an appointment.

To schedule an appointment please call the NYCAMH office during the date ranges listed below for each event and ask to speak with the farm respirator clinic scheduler. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. The office can be reached at 607-547-7014 or toll-free at 800-343-7527, Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM. When calling to schedule an appointment please have the following information available:
Total number of people attending from your farm
• Name of each person being scheduled
• Language spoken by each attendee
• Make and model of each respirator to be tested

If you are unable to attend the clinic in your area you may schedule an appointment at another location.

Strawberry Grower Survey

The CCE Eastern New York fruit team, along with collaborators from the University of New Hampshire and University of Vermont, wants to learn more about the practices you use and the challenges you face in strawberry production. Your responses will help them better understand the diversity of practices used in the Northeastern U.S. and Canada, and will help them design research & outreach programs to provide the best resources for improving strawberry production on your farm. This information is being gathered for Northeast SARE project "Advancing Strawberry Production in the Northeast".
The survey is available here: https://unh.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2nlFpEZhejOE0Pr
It should take approximately 15 minutes of your time. To thank you for your time, you can also be entered into a drawing to win fabulous prizes.

Survey on Degradable Mulching Films

Survey on Degradable Mulching Films for Sustainable Agriculture

As we know, thousands of square miles of worldwide agricultural land today utilize polyethylene mulch for crop production. Over the last several decades, however, polyethylene—the polymer used for products such as grocery bags, shampoo bottles, and children's toys—has become an environmental plague throughout the planet. A federal grant, matched by New York State and RIT, is enabling university researchers to study a competitive solution for identifying a more sustainable alternative to conventionally used plastics in farming. You can read the press release here.
The 'Degradable Mulching Films for Sustainable Agriculture' is a 4-year project covers biochemical formulations followed by field trials. This work is done in collaboration with the Cornell Vegetable Program team members and CCE-Monroe County staff. To start with, the researchers would like to better understand the current usage of plastic mulching film and challenges associated with by putting together this brief survey: https://cornell.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3mxuwOVlZlaxGvj
Thank you for your help supporting this important research for increased sustainability of our agriculture!

New Weed Management Technology Survey

Want to move away from herbicide reliance? Are you using novel technologies to manage weeds? We want to know about it to inform our weed science research. A team of weed scientists from University of California Davis, Oregon State University, and Cornell University are asking berry, tree fruit, tree nut, and vine crop growers to take 5 to 10 minutes and answer this short and anonymous survey.
